I love TV shows (like Buffy, Angel, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Spartacus) that have the confidence to kill off characters because that’s what the story deserves.

I also enjoy Boardwalk Empire because it focuses on a character you know was going to fail — unless it takes even more copious liberties with history.

Society idolizes winners, which is why they get the privilege of writing history. But focusing too much on the winners blind us to insights that can be had from the Jimmy Darmodys of the world.

Two days ago, Terence shared with me an article about survivorship bias on You Are Not So Smart.

It discusses how when trying to learn what works, it is necessary and paramount to learn from those who failed.
