Pariaman city government in Indonesia is holding a blogging contest for students to celebrate the city’s ninth anniversary. All junior and senior high school students in the area can enter the contest through their schools before July 5.
Inevitably, all blogs that are submitted to the competition must stick to a specific theme : “Pariaman City As the Islamic Tourist Destination”. Given that Indonesia has a majority Muslim population – especially in Pariaman – and that this seaside town needs more tourism income, this theme didn’t come as a surprise.
The city government has provided an array of photos and local listings to complement the participants’ blog design. The government hopes this blog competition can achieve two objectives: to promote Pariaman as a tourist destination, and also to encourage students to use information technology in a positive way. With blogging, the students can channel their talents and interests into something instructive.
The students’ blogs will be judged by a committee of Pariaman city government officials in cooperation with PT Telkom and RRI Studio Production of Pariaman. Tundra Laksamana, the communication department chief of Pariaman City said, “The Internet is a facility required to increase the nation’s competitiveness.” By which he means young Internet users must be directed to be more creative and productive when they’re online. This certainly sounds familiar coming from an Indonesian official.
Recently the Indonesia tourism board has also started promoting tourism through an informative website, certainly another a good example of how to do digital marketing.
