- Apple has asked its major suppliers to assess the monetary impact of moving 15% to 30% of its hardware production capacity from China to Southeast Asia as part of plans to restructure its supply chain, Reuters reported, citing a report by Nikkei Asian Review.
- The request comes on the heels of rising China-US trade tensions, though a trade resolution will not affect the company’s decision, the cited report said.
- Companies that have been asked by Apple to evaluate alternatives outside of China include Foxconn, major MacBook maker Quanta Computer, iPad maker Compal Electronics, and AirPods makers Inventec, Luxshare-ICT, and Goertek.
- Countries up for consideration include Mexico, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
