Sengoku no Hagyou review: absolute feudal domination

Last week Ucube released a new simulation game for iOS and Android devices called Sengoku no Hagyou “Let’s make a dream samurai troop”. The title may seem absurd, but bear with me: this is one masterpiece of a mobile game.

Creating your own feudal paradise

Sengoku no Hagyou, which I’m going to translate as “Feudal Domination,” can be best described as a simulation game that lets you run your own little castle town in feudal era Japan. The goal of Sengoku no Hagyou is to take out all of the surrounding feudal lords, and reign supreme. To do this you are going to need to build up your castle town and that is no simple task.

In your castle town you will spend your time leveling up your town’s people, barracks, training grounds, research facility, blacksmith, and of course your castle. Every few minutes your town’s people will provide you with more money, your barracks with more people, and your research facility with progress on whatever you are researching. The more money you invest in all of these, the more fruitful they will become, and the more powerful you become.

Strong armies need strong leaders

You will need more than money, better equipment, and soldiers to battle your way to the top. You need to build up your leaders to strengthen your might in battle. The battles are all simulated, but you can control how strong your troops are by leveling up the leaders in a very unique manner.

In Sengoku Hagyou you purchase leaders in the shop with in-game currency. If you have an open slot on your lineup, you can then include your newly purchased leader on the field. This will give you an extra attack every turn. If your leader slots are already taken, you can simply put this new leader in another leader’s troop to level up your current team’s strength.

On top of leveling up your leaders, you will get to collect different scrolls throughout the game that will allow your leaders to change classes and become stronger. An archer, for example, will start with a green scroll allowing him to use a typical bow. As you progress in the game you will obtain a blue scroll allowing use of a long bow, a red scroll which gets you a gun, and finally a purple scroll that could get you a canon.

These scrolls are hard to get, but overall leveling up your leaders is quick, easy, and actually a lot of fun. That is, as long as you have the money.
