Anna Hazare Ends Fast: India Celebrates

Anna Hazare has ended his fast as the Government of India agreed to work on the Jan Lopak bill with a deadline on June 30. However, Hazare insists that the fight is far from over until the bill is official passed and put into action. Of course, this is the first taste of victory as India continues to battle corruption.

A Facebook event at India Gate, New Delhi was set up to celebrate Anna Hazare and India’s victory. So far more than 500 people will be attending the event this evening. Updates on Facebook are coming in quickly to share the joy.

The whole experience watching how it started and ended (at least for now) is simply amazing. When we first picked up the news, we didn’t expect it to go this far. Somehow, we played a small part in this movement, spreading the words to help fight corruption in India. Most credits go to Anna Hazare and also Indians on Facebook, Twitter and petition signers who created pressure for the Government of India to act quickly.

“We need reforms in education, in labour’s rights, in the election system,” Anna Hazare said. “Decentralisation of power is very important to ensure corruption is defeated. As long as the voters don’t get power in their hand, corruption will remain.”
