More than 500,000 Signed Online Petition To Support Anna Hazare [UPDATED]

Update: The ‘Stand with Anna Hazare’ petition hit 500,000 within 48 hours. It didn’t need 38 hours.

Launched just yesterday, more than 270,000 people have already pledged their names with the online petition in support of Anna Hazare ‘Fast Unto Death‘ movement to fight corruption in India. The online petition is powered by Avaaz.org, which describes itself as “a global web movement to bring people-powered politics to decision-making everywhere.”

The signatures are coming in quickly as indicated on the page’s real-time “recent signers” updates. The site stated that 100,000 signatures were gathered in 15 hours. That is about 2 signatures per second. The site now aims to have 500,000 signatures which could be achieved in 38 hours if the rate of signatures remains at the same pace.

The petition will be delivered to India’s Prime Minister Singh and the media to show India’s determination to battle corruption. The decision still lies on PM Singh to endorse the Jan Lokpal.

“Anna Hazare is championing a citizen-developed bill called Jan Lokpal that will create an independent body, selected by judges, citizens and constitutional authorities, with enough power to investigate and punish all politicians. No minister or bureaucrat will be able to influence its investigations,” said the petition.

Anna Hazare’s fast will go on until the Jan Lokpal is endorsed. Bollywood director @FarOutAkhtar, famous Twitter personality @jhunjhunwala, veteran actor @AnupamPkher, and Sonia Ghandi, President of India National Congress have all supported the movement.
