ByteDance beefs up legal prowess with ex-Warner Bros exec hire

ByteDance has hired former Warner Bros. general counsel John Rogovin to serve in the same role, “which will encompass oversight” of TikTok.

During his time with Warner Bros., Rogovin had legal oversight over the media giant’s global operations, including its production and distribution of film and television in over 135 countries.

His duties covered a wide array of legal areas such as intellectual property and mergers and acquisitions.

“John brings strong legal instinct and a proven track record of successfully leading global teams that I know we will benefit from greatly as a company,” said Liang Rubo, CEO of ByteDance.

The new appointment comes as ByteDance battles a US law that would ban TikTok in the country if its operations there are not divested by January.

Earlier this week, it was reported that TikTok hit a pause on its ecommerce expansion plans in Europe to focus on growing its US operations, which can signal the ByteDance’s intent to safeguard the short-video app’s presence in the country.

Rogovin’s hiring follows Erich Andersen’s announcement in April of his intent to step down as general counsel and move to a special counsel role for ByteDance.

As of June 1, Rogovin directly reports to Rubo and TikTok’s CEO Shou Chew.
