500 Startups in Southeast Asia by the numbers

khailee-tia-jkt-2

We know that 500 Startups is keen on Southeast Asia – but how keen?

At the Tech in Asia Jakarta conference today, the Silicon Valley VC’s managing partner Khailee Ng confirmed to us that their Southeast Asian fund, 500 Durians, has more than doubled its size from US$10 million to US$22 million.

With that capital boost, we expect only one thing: 500 Startups’ portfolio of companies will get a lot bigger.

Because it’s moving at shotgun speed and most of us can’t keep up (no one really knows how many deals the VC is doing and how fast it’s doing them), Khailee gave us a clear picture. So here’s a look at 500 Startups and its investments in Southeast Asia by the numbers:

  • US$10 million worth of deals by 500 Durians, more or less, since its launch in June 2014. The fund, and 500 Startups in general, focuses on seed stage, signing checks for US$100,000 on average.
  • 100 investees by the end of 2015. 500 Durians completed 50 deals in its first year. Khailee says they will sign about 50 more by the end of this year. Some of the next 50 are done deals, while the rest have been committed. The investments are spread across Southeast Asia: Malaysia (20), Singapore (20), Indonesia (20), Thailand (10), Philippines (8), Vietnam (5), and Myanmar (1). There are 7 other international investments.
  • 11 out of the 20 first investments have raised series A funding or more. These include GrabTaxi, Bukalapak, Carousell, iMoney, ZipMatch, Eko, Playbasis, 99.co, Tradegecko, Pomelo, and ClaimDi.
  • 52 percent of the first 50 companies raised money after the seed stage, including seed extensions.
  • 6 percent of them look like they may fail, but they’re fighting to stay alive.
  • 50 next deals to be closed after this year could come from “anywhere.” However, Khailee says Vietnam and the Philippines are the priority markets. “Those two have a lot of potential. I’ve not done enough deals in those countries, but I want to make up for lost time.”
