Singapore’s Bluetree Electronics recently launched its update of TheKube mp3 player, appropriately named TheKube2. The player is, not surprisingly, cube-shaped, and its diminutive size draws immediate comparisons to Apple’s iPod Shuffle [1].
I’m not quite sure of the dimensions of TheKube2, but from the demo video below (courtesy of TechieLobang) you can get an idea for how small it really is. You control the device with touch gestures, though I’m a little skeptical about how well they work. For a device like this which you’re likely to have in your pocket, I think perhaps tactile buttons that you can feel might be a better choice.
Your songs are stored on a microSD card, and it comes with a four gigabyte card which will store about 1000 songs. Battery life is said to be good for about six hours of playback for an hour of charging.
Regrettably, TheKube2 is so far only available in Singapore, and only at 7-Eleven stores. The price tag is SGD45 (or about US$35), which is just a little cheaper than the SGD68 you’d be paying for an iPod Shuffle these days. Nonetheless it’s an interesting design, and it’s encouraging to see more alternatives in the super-portable music player space.

Personally speaking, I’m a huge fan of the iPod Shuffle, particularly my aged second generation model which just might be – I kid you not – my favorite electronic device of all time. I have my reasons though, as it has survived a laundry cycle without a problem. And because I listen to podcasts a lot, this “Autofill with latest podcasts” applescript makes it a perfect device for me. ↩
