It seems like a lot of Chinese companies are aiming to launch their own mobile operation systems. First we have a rumored Baidu mobile operating system in the works, and today the Wall Street Journal just reported that Alibaba Group is also looking at this field, specifically Alibaba’s Cloud Computing unit.
According to the report, the mobile operating system is likely to be released in the third quarter this year and will offer mobile cloud-based applications to users. The new OS will cater to the Chinese market but could also be made available in other countries. Alibaba declined to comment on the matter when we made contact this afternoon.
Just last week, Alipay, the online payment division of Alibaba Group, upgraded its smartphone app to allow transactions between shops and their customers through a mobile barcode feature. We can likely expect more developments as Alibaba starts its quest to gain a better foothold in the mobile industry.
