Apparently the only thing people enjoy more than the actual Apple stores in China — which are perpetually packed to the gills with people — are fake Apple stores in China. Yes, you have heard about the fake Apple store that was “discovered” in Kunming a few weeks ago from us, and then from a few thousand other giddy news outlets.
The story also made for some pretty compelling animated video.
Of course, finding a fake Apple store in China is sort of like finding bread in a grocery store, but I can understand the enthusiasm for this story. It’s got China making fake things and Apple, it’s like a kind of news keyword gold mine.
However, I wonder if this story will get the same amount of coverage. It turns out, you see, that China isn’t the only place with fake Apple stores. In fact, Apple is suing the phonies behind the obviously-fake “Apple Story” store, which is located in the US. In fact, “Apple Story” is just one of fifty defendants named in a suit Apple filed in a Brooklyn, NY court, according to Apple Insider. Most of the defendants listed are John Does, and it’s unknown whether the suit also targets fake Apple stores abroad.
Details of the suit will likely trickle out in the days to come, but in the meantime, we’re left to compare this fake New York Apple store with the fake store discovered in Kunming. And it has to be said, the New York store just isn’t up to par. As one Chinese commenter on Techweb put it, “American shanzhai things still aren’t as good as the Chinese ones.”
