Hi there,
During a family dinner, my uncle – while sharing a story quite enthusiastically – received a notification on his watch: “It seems like you have fallen down. Call for an emergency?”
He had neither fallen nor did he need any urgent help. He was simply excited.
The incident is but one example of how wearables fail, turning out to be clunky pieces of metal with bad battery lives.
Three years ago, large language models (LLMs) were in a similar boat. They hallucinated and made obvious mistakes.
They’re still prone to errors now,, but the threat of AI taking over jobs has never been more serious.
In fact, OpenAI will reportedly unveil its ChatGPT-5 any time now. The new iteration is expected to have improved reasoning and make better use of OpenAI’s text and reasoning models.
With ChatGPT doing more than ever, AI startups are challenged to become multifaceted too. Consider the startup in our first Big Story this week, Axium Industries, which aims to deliver enterprise-level agents to “legacy” businesses.
The founders, a former ByteDance executive and a Databricks lead engineer, say they aim to deliver the promised results that earlier AI firms had failed to follow through on.
In our second Big Story, my colleague Scott dives into the fight for the control of data in the age of AI. He focuses on Israel-based Bright Data, which won court battles against Meta and X over the right to scrape data from their platforms.
But just when Bright Data thought it was out of the woods, website and app infrastructure firm Cloudflare came up with a “pay-per-scrape” model that acts as a tollbooth for bots. While Bright Data says it can bypass it, the battle for data seems to have only begun.
And for this week’s Hot Take, I look at Google’s newest research on the large sensor model foundation – a critical tech necessary to make our wearables more functional than they are now. And it’s showing a lot of promise.
