Docomo’s YouTube Ad Goes Viral

Docomo Touch Wood sh-08c_tw_cHere’s a great commercial for DOCOMO’s Touch Wood phone, a handset on sale now in Japan made with an entirely wooden body. Recently the phone is getting some attention thanks to an absolutely ingenious commercial that features what could very well be the world’s longest xylophone and a carefree, bouncing wooden ball.

Now before environmentalists get all upset about using wood to create cell phones, it should be pointed out that the Touch Wood was “made with surplus cypress wood from trees culled during thinning operations carried out to maintain healthy forests.” According to DOCOMO, it’s made with a special compression technology that improves the wood’s durability and resistance to water and mildew. Each handset has a unique grain pattern as well.

For a look at the stunning promo ad, check out the YouTube video below. As I write this, it’s just sneaking up on one million views.

Hacoa iPhone 4 wooden caseThe Touch Wood isn’t for everybody though, and we certainly understand if many iPhone lovers don’t want to change handset. Thankfully Japanese woodworker Hacoa, the company who brought us the clever Ki-Board (pdf), has created a beautiful wooden case for the iPhone 4.

iPad users looking to get their wood-on (I can say that, right?) might check out this DIY wooden iPad case (hat tip to my friends at TUAW) or this case by Sasaki Kogei.
