ByteDance bursts into the Chinese top game list by revenue with One Piece

One Piece: The Voyage, a pirate-themed game developed by ByteDance’s game studio Nuverse and CMGE Technology Group, has become the fifth-biggest mobile game by revenue in May. It is the first game from the TikTok maker to break into the top 10 game list in China,” South China Morning Post reported, citing a report from Chinese game research firm CNG.

Details:

  • A source at ByteDance said the game has earned more than US$50 million in less than two months after it was launched on April 23. Sensor Tower, meanwhile, says that the title has netted US$42 million as of May.
  • The top revenue-earning games in China are still Tencent’s titles, such as Honor of Kings, which earned US$264.5 million, and the Chinese version of PUBG Mobile, Peacekeeper Elite, that got US$258 million on May.

Context:

  • ByteDance, known for its news app Toutiao and short-video platform TikTok, has aggressively expanded into the gaming space. In March, it outbid Tencent to acquire Mobile Legends maker Moonton Technology.
  • The video game industry in China generated 18.6 billion yuan (around US$2.9 billion) of revenue in May, an increase of about 5.3% from the same month last year.
