Chinese ecommerce major JD.com is officially closing shop in Thailand and Indonesia by March 3 and March 31, respectively.
Both platforms will stop receiving orders by February 15. As such, JD.com urged its customers to use up or transfer the balance in their accounts and pay off any loans before the closing dates.
Customer service support will be available online until March 15 in Indonesia and March 30 in Thailand.
Earlier this month, Tech in Asia reported that JD.id was shuttering its in-house logistics arm by January 22.
The departure of JD.com from the two Southeast Asian countries had been expected for months. The Chinese company entered both markets through separate joint ventures, with Provident Capital in Indonesia and Central Group in Thailand.
In December, JD.id laid off 30% of its staff or around 200 employees, citing “the challenges of the rapidly changing business” as the reason behind the decision.
In Indonesia, JD.id was constantly trailing behind Shopee, Tokopedia, and Lazada. According to Data.ai figures, JD.id struggled to hit 1 million active users in Indonesia, while Shopee had 31 million and Tokopedia boasted 17 millionin 2022. Meanwhile, Shopee and Lazada also dominated in Thailand.
