Sequoia Capital reveals 20 startups in second Surge cohort

Sequoia Capital’s startup accelerator program, Surge, has named the 20 companies that form the Surge 02 2019 cohort, with at least six currently at a pre-launch stage.

About 80% of startups that were part of Surge 02 have come on board with co-investors and have raised more than US$45 million in Surge rounds, according to a statement.

The startups included in the latest cohort serve in various industries, including consumer internet, edtech, agtech, clean energy, social commerce, fintech, software-as-a-service, robotics, and direct-to-consumer brands.

Through the program, which kicked off on September 23, the startups will receive mentorship support from other founders and business leaders, as well as connections to startups and trends in the global tech markets.

Here are the startups in Surge 02, with one company in complete stealth mode:

Airalo

Founders: Bahadir Ozdemir and Abraham Burak
Launched: March 2019
Co-investor: Antler

Through its platform, US-based Airalo provides travelers with access to over 190 embedded SIMs (eSIMs) from different parts of the world at local rates.

The company, which claims to be the world’s first eSIM store, has partnerships with hundreds of telcos globally to offer users access to local and global eSIMs.

Bijak

Founders: Daya Rai, Jitender Bedwal, Mahesh Jakhotia, Nukul Upadhye, and Nikhil Tripathi
Launched: May 2019
Co-investors: Omdiyar Network, Omnivore Partners, and angel investors Better Capital and Nipun Mehra

Bijak is a business-to-business trade platform for the agricultural sector in India that enables traders, wholesalers, and food processors to keep a ledger of their transactions, access transparent pricing, optimize logistics, and improve their working capital cycles.

It brings accountability and transparency in the agricultural value chain through a buyer/seller rating system that’s based on real-time transaction data. Users on the platform can leverage those ratings to identify and trade with reliable counterparts.

Brick&Bolt

Founders: Arpit Rajpurohit and Jayesh Rajpurohit
Launched: January 2018
Co-investors: Angel investors Aakash Goel, Anuj S, Meghna Agarwal, Navin Dhanuka, and Ramakant Sharma

Brick&Bolt is an ecommerce platform that focuses on making home and commercial construction simple, transparent, and reliable for customers.
