8 rising startups in India – Mar 21

From a leading auto portal, which entered the elusive portfolio of Google Capital, to yet another laundry app, which raised seed funding from Unitus, no less, it’s been another interesting day for Indian startups. One of them, mobile payments startup Qarth got acquired by taxi app Ola. In the mix are also four startups which are in Santiago for the famed Start-Up Chile accelerator program – the only ones from Asia to make it there.

Auto portal CarDekho today became only the fourth startup in India to get into the Google Capital portfolio. Its illustrious predecessors are customer support software maker Freshdesk, real estate portal CommonFloor, and healthcare startup Practo.

CarDekho was founded in Jaipur by Amit and Anurag Jain. It had an impressive lineup of investors even before Google Capital’s entry – Sequoia Capital, Ratan Tata, Hillhouse Capital, and HDFC Bank. CarDekho, which competes with CarTrade, is a major player in used cars, whose sales have caught up with that of new cars in India.

MyWash, LaundryPrime, QuickClean… there’s no dearth of on-demand laundry services apps in India. But apparently, there’s scope for more innovation in this space. Gurgaon-based OneClickWash is the latest to join the cleaning brigade.

Its differentiator is an end-to-end service. “Owning the entire supply chain is critical for this. This helps us provide the best possible customer experience and not just act as aggregators,” says the startup’s co-founder and CEO Vivek Iyer, who is an alumnus of IIT Bombay and IIM Ahmedabad. OneClickWash today announced an undisclosed amount in seed funding from Unitus Seed Fund.

Budget accommodation aggregator Room-on-Call today raised US$2 million in a bridge round of funding through Enablers, which is a platform connecting startups with investors. Room-on-Call had earlier raised seed funding from a Yahoo executive. It competes in this space with Oyo Rooms, Wudstay, and Treebo. The funding is aimed at scaling up Room-on-Call for a pan-India presence.
