7 rising startups in India – May 1

Acquisition, funding, expansion – it’s been an interesting last few days of April. From an auto portal to health tech to the wedding brigade, the range of startups gaining traction is wide. A fashion app, a marketing platform, and social impact complete the roundup.

GirnarSoft owns price comparison site PriceDekho and auto portal CarDekho, which acquired Gaadi, and Zigwheels. It wanted to improve the user experience across all its portals, fast. So it took the fastest route to get it done: an acquisition. The company bought Connecto, which has device-agnostic tools to help product managers and marketers communicate more efficiently with their customers.

Two-year-old Connecto gives its clients services like a notification engine, A/B testing, custom integrations, and an automatic user profiles creator. GirnarSoft signed a cash and stock deal to acquire it. Amit Jain, co-founder and CEO of GirnarSoft, said that his company is “always on the look-out for more hi-tech startups to augment our tech expertise.” So, more acquisition news could be on its way.

Impact Guru

Fintech startup Impact Guru is a crowdfunding platform for nonprofits and other social enterprises. “The traditional charity and social enterprise fundraising model in India is broken. The alternatives to online fundraising are outdated, expensive, and ineffective,” Piyush Jain, co-founder and CEO of Impact Guru, believes.

The company, incubated at Harvard Innovation Lab in 2014 and Impact Hub in Singapore in 2015, announced its seed funding round. The venture capital investment of US$500,000 came from RB Investments, a Singapore-based VC firm, and Fundnel, a Southeast Asia-based private investment platform. Impact Guru has offices in India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kuala Lumpur, and San Francisco.

Most heathcare apps that connect doctors to patients do not have specialists on their platforms. This is where Bangalore-based DocsApp is different. Two of Facebook’s early angel investors – Anand Rajaraman and Venky Harinarayan – and Japan’s Rebright Partners have made a seed investment of US$1.2 million in the app which promises to connect a user to a specialist doctor within 30 minutes for a consultation.
