Sina Weibo Holds Tudou’s Hands, Youku Still on its Own For Now
Last Friday, Tudou (NASDAQ:TUDO) announced that they will be integrating on a deeper level with Sina Weibo. From now on, Sina Weibo users who are not registered with Tudou, but wish to share their videos with Tudou’s users, can use their Sina Weibo credentials to log into Tudou.
Tudou claims to be the first video site to have such a partnership with Sina Weibo. Outside the world of online video, it’s not just Tudou doing this, though. Last week, we saw Qihoo 360 striking a similar deal where both companies share users’ login credentials to cross-promote and boost users. In the Tudou statement, it was also revealed that the number of Tudou videos shared on Sina Weibo rose by 234 percent between June 2011 to September 2011.
Gary Wang, the founder, chairman, and CEO of Tudou, commented:
We are building a more powerful video user ecosystem. The internet’s core strength lies in creating and sharing information. Sina Weibo creates strong interaction between its users, and Tudou generates deep emotional connections between Internet users and content. Creating and sharing content is at the core of the Internet, and Tudou’s cooperation with social networking sites such as Sina Weibo is a powerful combination which will deepen consumers’ online video and sharing experience.
Sina Weibo’s plan seems pretty straightforward: it hopes to partner with as many companies as possible that have a large user base so it can become the primary social sharing content platform in China.
Given that, I would guess that if Youku were to approach Sina Weibo, chances are good that Sina would be happy to work with them. For now though, Youku users can only enjoy Sina Weibo integration for easy video-sharing to the microblog service.
