iPad To Play A Role in Indonesia Independence Day Ceremony

We already reported about an experiment to remotely mix sound with the iPad via WiFi. Today, the same method will be applied during the 66th Indonesian Independence Day Ceremony, at Istana Merdeka, Jakarta.

Kiss Productions, an audio engineering company, will introduce the new technology in front of the president and all honored guests. It coincides with the Istana Merdeka authority’s plan to use the new sound system along with locally-made speakers. As Harry Kiss explained to detikinet, the company will use a time-aligned sound system and prioritize the psychological aspects of sound direction. A mixer operator can use software installed on the iPad to control the digital audio mixer over WiFi.

That all sounds very complex, but basically it means that all guests will be able to recognize from which direction the sound is coming from. For example, if the sound comes from the place where the president stands, people will hear the sound from there toward Istana Merdeka yard. And if the sound comes from the orchestra and choir it will be directed to the palace terrace.

The iPad application, named StageMix iPad App for Yamaha, was released in September of last year by Yamaha Commercial Audio. It has been downloaded more than 45,000 times since it launched. Following its success, the company announced the availability of the new version – StageMix 2.0 – at the end of July. And just like its predecessor, the new version is also available as a free download from Apple’s iTunes store.

The iPad’s popularity in the country is undoubtedly enormous. It is considerably more expensive compared to other tablets in Indonesia, which are also growing in popularity here. Many people still consider the iPad their dream tablet. And this new application for the Indonesian Independence Day Ceremony could boost its popularity even more, particularly among audiophiles.
