Well, here’s a rumor you probably weren’t expecting: according to a report on Netease’s Starcraft sub-site, Chinese pro team Zenith of Origin (ZOO) suddenly disbanded Friday afternoon.
Don’t worry; they didn’t really disband. The team’s official microblog account quickly responded that it has not yet disbanded, but that “we indeed have encountered some problems.” ZOO player Courage, who isn’t in Beijing with the rest of the team at present, told the media he wasn’t sure of the exact situation, saying:
Anyway, I’m sure it hasn’t gotten to the point of immediately disbanding yet, but our boss’s financial troubles are real, because the club has never been profitable. What can you do?
He elaborated on his microblog account:
As of now we have not disbanded, the current problem is related to our investors, but the Starcraft section of the team is still training, the players are still at the club, and it won’t influence WCS or future competitions.
From the sound of it, then, the club remains together but its investors may have pulled out. It’s unclear how long ZOO can sustain itself without them, especially given that the team took a financial hit last year when its previous manager reportedly stole money from the club and bought a BMW with it.
