Samsung whips out crystal ball, sees vision of 4K smartphone screens and self-made CPU core
Samsung held its second ever Analyst Day in Seoul today, giving everyone a look into the Korean giant’s newest numbers and future strategies. Aside from anticipating 100 million Galaxy S and Note phones being shipped, Samsung is looking further ahead with some bold new tech.
According to Samsung’s own slides for today’s event, the firm anticipates smartphone and tablet screens hitting 560 pixels per inch (PPI) next year. That’s way beyond the 441 PPI of its already full HD 1080p Galaxy S4 screen. That kind of pixel density will be dubbed WQHD (as opposed to 1080p’s FHD). Looking ahead even further, Samsung foresees ultra HD screens (eg: 3840 x 2160 on a phone) in 2015. As noted by AndroidBeat, that means 4K screens on mobile devices in a couple of years.

Samsung foresees WQHD screens making up 60 percent of the market for screens by 2018, with the inevitably pricier UHD making up 25 percent of screens. But that includes TVs as well as mobile devices.
ARM wrestle
Samsung also revealed today that it’s planning to make its own chip core in the future. While Samsung makes its own chips already (the Exynos chips), it relies on the ARM core. But the Korean firm is clearly keen to emulate Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) in making even the core of its own processor chips. Here’s Samsung’s slide:

That’s a two-step process. First Samsung will go 64-bit (once Android is ready for that) with ARM-based Exynos chips, and then at an unspecified point in the future it’ll be totally fabricating its own 64-bit processors.
