TikTok restored in US amid legal risks for providers
TikTok regained access in the US on January 20, raising questions about actions taken by service providers like Oracle and app stores such as Apple and Google.
The congressional mandate for TikTok to divest from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, expired. Some service providers are reportedly taking risks to continue to operating the app despite the lack of an agreement.
Legal experts warn that companies could face fines of up to US$5,000 for each user, potentially totaling US$850 billion.
While President-elect Donald Trump has suggested delaying the ban or triggering a new 90-day extension, the Biden administration did not pursue this option.
