Austrian advocacy group Noyb on Jan. 16 filed privacy complaints against six Chinese companies over unlawful transfers of EU user data to China.

Those companies are TikTok, AliExpress, Shein, Xiaomi, Temu, and WeChat.

Noyb claims that TikTok, Shein, Xiaomi, and AliExpress acknowledge sending user data to China.

Meanwhile, Temu and WeChat reportedly send data to unnamed “third countries,” which are likely China.

Under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), data transfers outside the EU are only allowed if the recipient country meets EU data protection standards.

Noyb argues that China’s data protection laws fall short of these requirements.
