Tesla has earned US$11 billion from selling emissions credits since 2012. This revenue highlights the company’s key role in the tradeable regulatory credits that help automakers meet Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emission standards.

In the first nine months of 2024, Tesla generated US$2.1 billion from credit sales. This amount represents 43% of its US$4.8 billion net income.

Tesla is currently the largest beneficiary of the emissions credit system worldwide. The company holds long-term contracts worth US$4.7 billion, with US$683 million expected next year.

However, changes to federal emissions regulations may threaten this revenue stream. Donald Trump’s potential relaxation of standards could reduce demand for credits.
