OpenAI wins fair use defense in news sites lawsuit
A New York federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by news sites Raw Story and AlterNet against OpenAI.
The suit challenged the company’s use of their articles to train its AI systems.
Judge Colleen McMahon ruled that the plaintiffs failed to show any concrete harm caused by OpenAI’s use of their content.
The court supported OpenAI’s fair use argument, noting that ChatGPT synthesizes information rather than simply copying it.
It was highlighted that ChatGPT’s ability to reproduce full articles is unlikely since factual content does not fall under copyright protection.
