Meta ends fact-checking, introduces community-based notes
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced the end of its third-party fact-checking program.
It will be replaced by “community notes,” a user-driven initiative similar to the system used by Elon Musk’s platform, X.
The change was revealed on Tuesday by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who characterized the move as a tilt toward prioritizing free speech.
Joel Kaplan, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, stated that the transition will occur in the coming months.
The third-party fact-checking initiative began in 2016 in response to growing criticism regarding misinformation spread on Meta’s platforms.
