Apple explores expressive robotics with Pixar-like lamp

Apple has shared details about its consumer robotics research, highlighting the role of expressive movements in robotic designs to improve human-robot interaction.

The study features a lamp as an example of a “non-anthropomorphic” robot, drawing comparisons to Pixar’s Luxo Jr. lamp, an early project from a company co-founded by Steve Jobs.

The prototype demonstrate movements conveying attention and intention.

The video illustrates the lamp robot imitating familiar human actions, such as responding to a weather inquiry or glancing at a window before answering.

It functions similarly to a smart speaker, using Siri to responds queries.

This aligns with Apple’s broader consumer robotics strategy amid speculation about a more advanced smart home system.

Despite these developments, Apple’s consumer robotics efforts are still in the research phase, with no confirmed product releases.
