Amazon, Microsoft lead task force on carbon market reforms
Amazon, Microsoft, and Exxon have joined a Bipartisan Policy Center-led task force to reform voluntary carbon markets with policy recommendations.
Announced recently, the task force consists of 17 members, including representatives from startups like Heirloom, Isometric, and BeZero, along with nonprofit organizations and timber industry executives.
The task force formed after reports revealed Verra had issued ineffective carbon offsets, leading to increased scrutiny and leadership changes.
Microsoft and Amazon, both engaged in carbon offset programs, have encountered difficulties in achieving their climate goals.
In 2024-2025, Microsoft purchased 7 million metric tons of credits, and Amazon invested US$180 million in Brazilian rainforest offsets.
