Tencent wants Smite to be an eSport as Team WE announces new Smite team

When you think of Tencent and eSports MOBA titles, League of Legends is understandably the one that comes to mind. But at the company’s annual press event today, Tencent announced that another foreign-developed MOBA it publishes in China—Smite—is moving forward both as a consumer facing game and as an eSports title in China.

On the consumer side, the game will begin its second round of beta testing in China on May 21. But Tencent has also announced that it will be placing more emphasis on Smite as an eSports title, setting up a new site where China-based gamers can register teams. Leading the charge will be Team World Elite‘s new WE.Smite team, which will be aiming to bring Smite glory to China with a win at the World Championships in Atlanta in early 2015.

WE.Smite’s roster has not been announced yet, so talented Chinese Smite players still have a chance to earn their spot in the eSports organization’s newest team. Of course, it’s not easy to be a talented Chinese Smite player when the game isn’t publicly available, but hopefully more players will get a chance to prove their skill in the game when it hits its second beta phase this May.
