Beijing Police has arrested a man in connection with last month’s hack attack on Sina Weibo, China’s most popular microblogging site.
The incident last month saw a user by the name of @hellosamy – whose Weibo page is pictured below before Sina removed it – use a security exploit in the site to get users to send out links that auto-followed the @hellosamy account, and automatically ‘direct messaged’ the same link to all of their followers, so that the hack was self-propagating.
The hack didn’t infect a user’s computer in any way – it just accrued tens of thousands of followers for the hacker, before Sina shut him down.
According to the People’s Daily Online, the detained man is a 26-year-old, surnamed Luo. The newspaper reports:
Luo confessed that his act was aimed at attracting attention to his own Weibo account.
Well, he certainly did attract the attention of tens of thousands of new Weibo followers with his hack, which came with tempting promises of naked photos of famous actresses, or – as pictured below – enticements of clips from a 3D sex movie. As you can see, Luo – if proved to be the hacker in this particular instance – also set his gender as female on Weibo.
