Indonesia’s XL To Add 655 3G Base Stations

In order to support the high demand for mobile data in Indonesia, XL Axiata is now preparing more 3G base stations in the country. This year XL plans to add 655 3G base stations in the Central Region, which are West Java, Central Java and Yogyakarta.

XL will add 235 new 3G base stations in June, and another 420 units in November.

Out of the 40 million XL’s users, 27 million of them are using mobile data services. Raden Wicaksono, Manager of Mobile Data Service XL Central Region said that the majority of the mobile data service users (about 60 percent) are accessing through their mobile phones. The rest are using data services through internet dongles.

With more 3G base stations, XL Axiata reinforces the quality of its network, casting a wider 3G area in the country. GM Sales XL Central Region, Bambang Parikesit said that XL can only really start penetrating the market after its mobile network infrastructure support is ready. We have also seen a similar mobile network upgrade in China as Shanghai added 500 Wi-Fi booths back in mid march.

As Indonesia gains advancement in mobile internet, we can expect more users to join this mobile revolution. Indonesia is late as compared to mobile savvy countries like Japan and Singapore. Nonetheless initiative from telco providers like XL, would provide a good foundation for mobile-related start-ups to ride on this growing curve.
