Hello readers,

When I was in university, a fair number of my friends earned extra cash by tutoring primary and secondary school kids. I never made the venture into the space myself – being far too lazy for any kind of lesson planning – but it certainly seemed like a very lucrative line of work.

After all, parents are willing to pay good money to ensure that their kids are in the best position for the future, and education plays a pretty huge role in that. With the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuing lockdowns keeping kids at home and unable to attend classes, it’s no surprise that the edtech sector in India is seeing explosive growth.

Today we look at,

  • The leading players in the Indian edtech space
  • How the latest round of funding for this Chinese autonomous vehicle startup will help it achieve its goals
  • Other newsy highlights such as Bukalapak’s partnership with Standard Chartered and Google’s crackdown on personal loan apps in India

PREMIUM SUMMARY

Edtech on the rise

Education is the key to success. Or at least, it sure seems to be the case for India’s edtech startups. The sector has seen tremendous growth over the last year, with a huge surge in users and funding. And given that the Indian government’s human resource development ministry projects that the country’s edtech expenditure will reach US$10 trillion by 2030, edtech is definitely a vertical to watch.

We decided to map out the companies and funding that’s gone into the sector.

  • That’s very cash money: In 2020, India’s edtech startups raised a little over US$2 billion across 55 deals. That’s a sharp rise from 2019, where US$473 million was raised across just 36 deals.
  • It’s about the foundations: The K12 and test prep category bagged the most funding at almost US$2 billion alone, followed by continued learning and higher education.
  • Something new: Other areas of interest for investors include online STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) courses and startups that offer full-stack programming training for children and adults.
