WeChat-based food delivery startup ‘Call a Chicken’ raises $1.6M angel round

Investment in China’s food delivery startups is heating up, and China’s southwestern Sichuan province has come up with its own answer to Beijing’s “Call a Duck” food delivery service. The Chengdu-based startup, called “Call a Chicken”, just raised more than RMB 10 million (US$1.6 million) in angel investment from Sichuan-based investors and funds.
Call a Chicken is exactly what it sounds like: a chicken-focused food delivery service. It offers different chicken-based dishes, prepared by renowned chefs and cooked with fresh meat, for home delivery. Customers order via WeChat – the company doesn’t even have a traditional website, as far as I can tell – or by phone anytime between 9 A.M. and 4 P.M. The dishes available change periodically and range in price. They’re also limited every day, Xiaomi-style, so the dish you’re looking for could sell out if you wait too long to order.
According to Sina Tech, investors are buying into Call a Chicken because they believe in the business model, but they’ve also chosen this specific startup to support because of China’s culinary tastes. Spicy Sichuan food – which the startup specializes in – is a popular cuisine all over the nation, and investors believe the potential market is pretty massive.
