With the rise of tablet computers, there has been a corresponding interest in reader applications on those devices. And while many tablets have their own default application, a company in Indonesia has now has an entirely independent digital reader application named WayangForce.
Unlike most digital readers in the country, this one was developed by a local Indonesian start-up, PhaseDev. It’s a multi-platform application, and is available for download for the iPad and Android devices. What’s remarkable about this app is that the size of files downloaded are 20 to 50 percent smaller than most digital readers. Jeffrey Anthony, CTO of PhaseDev explained, “Our servers are also in Indonesia, so download time becomes faster. We dare to compare with other digital readers, even those that Apple had. We do not want to get too fancy, but [focus more on] usability.”
WayangForce is also working with several major publishers in Indonesia such as Kompas, Gramedia, SWA, Balai Pustaka, Megindo, and many more. But they aren’t only limiting themselves only to large publishers, but they also support comic book publishers and other self-publishing content producers.
The emergence of new applications from local start-ups is indicative of local app developers’ enthusiasm toward new technology. Expect to see more fascinating applications from Indonesian developers to encourage the growth of digital media in the country.
