Electrum, the joint venture between GoTo Group and energy firm TBS Energi Utama, is constructing a factory to manufacture two-wheel electric vehicles (EVs) in Indonesia.
The factory, located in the West Java province, is expected to produce up to 250,000 EVs annually and will include testing facilities. Electrum said it aims to support the government’s goal of having 9 million electric motorcycles on the road by 2030.
Pandu Sjahrir, president director of Electrum, said the company will continue working to meet relevant requirements and collaborate with local firms to support the country’s EV infrastructure efforts. Electrum has already forged partnerships with companies like Pertamina, GIIC, and Planet Ban.
These collaborations involve efforts in battery packaging and production, EV adoption, battery swapping, as well as after-sales services.
Electrum was formed in 2021 to focus on setting up the infrastructure for electric two-wheelers and boosting their adoption.
Recently, Indonesia has set aside about US$110 million in incentives for manufacturers, retailers, and individuals to increase sales and adoption of EVs. President Joko Widodo had previously announced a target of having at least 2 million electric motorcycles in Indonesia by 2025.
Last year, Electrum launched a pilot program for e-bikes in Jakarta through the GoRide Electric service, involving 500 EVs operated by Gojek’s driver-partners.
In January 2022, Electrum also inked a deal with Gogoro, a battery station maker from Taiwan, as part of the efforts to build Indonesia’s EV infrastructure.
