TransferWise used this pitch deck to secure $1.3m in seed funding

ABOUT

London-based fintech startup TransferWise is an international money transfer startup that lets expats, foreign students, and businesses move money at affordable rates. The company is licensed as a foreign exchange and money remittance company by the UK Financial Services Authority and Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.

In 2012, the company used this pitch deck to secure US$1.3 million in seed funding. TransferWise has since grown to have a valuation of around US$3.5 billion, after it secured US$292 million in a funding round in 2019.

It recently enabled international money transfers to China through a partnership with Alipay and added support for six mobile wallets in three Asian countries as part of its expansion plans.

By March of this year, TransferWise said it handles roughly US$5 billion in cross-border transfers every month for its over 7 million users.

Fundraising journey

  • 2012: US$1.3 million seed funding led by IA Ventures and Index Ventures, participated by Max Levchin – the co-founder of PayPal, Kima Ventures, Seedcamp, and The Accelerator Group.
  • 2013: US$6 million series A led by Valar Ventures and participated by SV Angel, IA Ventures, Index Ventures, Seedcamp, and The Accelerator Group.
  • 2014: US$25 million series B from Valar Ventures, IA Ventures, Index Ventures, The Accelerator Group, Kima Ventures, and Richard Branson.
  • 2015: US$58 million series C from Andreessen Horowitz, Richard Branson, Valar Ventures, Index Ventures, IA Ventures, and Seedcamp.
  • 2016: US$26 million series D led by Baillie Gifford and participated by the other existing investors.
  • 2017: US$280 million series E led by Old Mutual Global Investors and IVP, with participation from Sapphire Ventures, Mitsui & Co, World Innovation Lab, Richard Branson, Andreessen Horowitz, and Baillie Gifford.
  • 2018: US$74.1 million in debt financing from NatWest, JP Morgan, and LHV Pank.
  • 2019: US$292 million in secondary funding round led by Lead Edge Capital, Lone Pine Capital, and Vitruvian Partners, participated by existing investors Andreessen Horowitz, Baillie Gifford, and funds managed by BlackRock.
