Healthtech firm Oscar used this pitch deck to raise $80m from ex-PayPal exec, others

ABOUT

US-based Oscar is a direct-to-consumer health insurance platform that provides medical packages for individuals, families, and small groups.

With an aim to make healthcare accessible and affordable, the company offers free telemedicine to members and integrates direct scheduling with healthcare providers through its app. According to the firm, the platform operates in “15 states and 29 US markets” and has over 420,000 members across its individual, medicare advantage, and small-group products.

In March, Oscar raised US$1.2 billion from its initial public offering, giving the Alphabet Inc.-backed company a valuation of US$7.7 billion.

Oscar used this deck to secure its series A funding.

Fundraising journey

  • 2013: US$40 million of seed funding from Thrive Capital, Founders Fund, General Catalyst, and Khosla Ventures
  • January 2014: US$30 million in a second tranche of seed funding from Founders Fund, Khosla Ventures, General Catalyst, and Thrive Capital
  • May 2014: It bagged US$80 million in its series A round led by Joe Lonsdale from 8VC, who is also a former executive from PayPal. Other investors including Jim Breyer from Breyer Capital, Stanley Druckenmiller (founder of hedge fund Duquesne Capital), Founders Fund, General Catalyst, Khosla Venture, and Thrive Capital also participated in the round
  • April 2015: Oscar landed US$145 million of series B funding led by Peter Thiel and Brian Singerman from Founders Fund. Also joining in the round were investors including Li Ka-Shing of Horizon Ventures, the Wellington Management Company, and Goldman Sachs.
  • September 2015: US$35.2 million in a bridge round from CapitalG
  • 2016: US$400 million in its series C round led by Fidelity with participation from CapitalG, General Catalyst, Founders Fund, Lakestar, Khosla Ventures, China’s Ping An, and Thrive Capital
  • March 2018: US$165 million of late-stage funding led by Founders Fund with participation from 8VC, Verily Life Sciences, Fidelity, General Catalyst, Capital G, Khosla Ventures, and Thrive Capital
  • August 2018: US$375 million of late-stage funding from Alphabet Inc.
  • June 2020: US$225 million in late-stage funding from investment firm Baillie Gifford, Coatue, Alphabet, General Catalyst, Khosla Ventures, Lakestar, and Thrive Capital
  • December 2020: US$140 million in late-stage funding led by Tiger Global Management with participation from Dragoneer, Baillie Gifford, Coatue, Founders Fund, Khosla Ventures, Lakestar, and Reinvent
