Mapping India’s key genAI contenders in the global AI race

In the past five years, generative AI startups in India have raised a total of just over US$2 billion.

In contrast, pioneering genAI firm OpenAI alone has secured US$17.9 billion in funding, which includes a mammoth US$6.6 billion round that it closed just this month.

For a country as vast as India, this funding disparity is striking. Still, that’s not stopping local startups from entering the genAI industry.

According to Tracxn data, shared with Tech in Asia, India is home to over 200 genAI startups, but only 43 have secured funding, and a majority of these firms are at the seed stage. Despite the launch of 16 new companies this year, none have successfully raised capital yet.

In 2023, a whopping 77 startups launched in the segment, driven by ChatGPT 3.5’s release. However, only 14 of these businesses managed to secure backing from investors.

The question is whether this signals an emerging bubble in India, or if genAI is poised to become the next major milestone in the country’s startup landscape.

Fad or future?

The AI startups most likely to thrive will be those that can “establish a strong competitive edge,” Jaspreet Bindra, founder of AI & Beyond, tells Tech in Asia.

Bindra, whose company promotes AI literacy, says startups can do this either by “delivering an exceptional user experience or by addressing a highly specific, India-centric problem.”

If startups can do this, they will have the potential to transform industries and drive economic growth, he adds.
