Has the global startup funding frenzy breathed its last for now? A recent spate of layoffs suggests that funding winter could worsen.
Tech giants such as Meta, Twitter, and Amazon recently announced large scale layoffs as they look to cut costs to navigate through macroeconomic headwinds.

But all hope is not lost yet. Even as layoffs are happening across India, Southeast Asia, and China, there are several startups in these regions that are still hiring. We found over 15,000 job openings in the last week.

Tech in Asia’s analysis shows more than 200 startups across these regions are hiring. A majority of them are Indian and Southeast Asian startups. China is at a distant third position, as the clampdown by local regulators resulted in big employers like Tencent and Alibaba to expand outside the country. However, its worth noting that China is a distinct ecosystem and hence a lot of job postings are not open to us.
Here are the details of the publicly disclosed openings that we’ve tracked across Southeast Asia, India, and China:
While there are a number of companies looking for talent in Asia, the number of openings has now been significantly reduced. There were over 25,000 job openings six months earlier. At that time there were many companies conducting mass-scale hirings of over 1,000 employees. Now it’s down to the hundreds.
This is as funding across the region has slowed significantly across the last few months. Investments plateaued across Southeast Asia in 2022 as the recession looms.
We further found that the ecommerce and fintech industries across India and Southeast Asia have emerged as the biggest sectors for employment in the startup ecosystem. It is closely followed by the SaaS and edtech industries.
So, who are these startups looking for?
Unsurprisingly, there is a huge demand for software engineers and tech developers. These roles are the backbone for digital platforms.
Business and product operations roles are the next job profiles in demand. Followed by sales and business development role job openings.
The startups offering the most openings are in their late stages. A majority of the startups hiring in these three regions are from post-series C stages of funding. It is worth noting that there are also many startups in the series A stage in Southeast Asia that are looking to hire staff.
