How TIA’s role as the ‘connecting tissue’ can bring startups and corporations together

As part of its mission to build and serve Asia’s tech and startup community, Tech in Asia sometimes acts as a kind of connecting tissue between large corporations and fledgling startups.

It’s an approach that keeps us sharp on the latest developments on the ground and provides us that bird’s eye view on larger landscape shifts and trends. Both ends of the spectrum are important.

This “connecting tissue” role can also be played in an active manner. When one of Southeast Asia’s leading financial institutions hit us up to help it meet and work with promising fintech startups to achieve its growth objectives… well, let’s just say it came to the right place.

Fostering forum

With Tech in Asia’s network and content expertise, we helped the client put on a one-day technology forum. Complete with keynote and panel discussions, pitching sessions by startups, and – of course – bespoke matchmaking sessions, the whole event was set up to encourage learning, sharing, and practical networking.

Our team also helped with managing communications with the invited startups, which was part of the larger plan to host targeted business matchmaking meetings. These meetings were moderated by the events team to optimize the client and startups’ time and efforts, with a goal of achieving alignment as soon as possible.

Last but not least, the client’s branding was featured prominently on event collaterals, including customized speakers’ and startups’ gifts.

At a glance:

It’s one thing to put together a one-day event – it’s another to make sure that everyone involved gets value out of their experience. Between the stage sessions and in-depth matchmaking conversations, this forum can be described with one word: impactful.

Objectives

  • Identify and engage with promising fintech startups that were aligned with the needs of the financial institution’s key business units
  • Facilitate meaningful connections and potential partnerships between the institution and startups
  • Position the institution as a leader in fostering innovation and digital transformation within the financial industry

Delivery

  • A one-day technology forum with compelling keynote and panel sessions and a dedicated startup exhibition
  • Targeted engagement of invited startups, with end-to-end communications that optimized their time and exhibition presence
  • Streamlined business matchmaking: Our team hosted over 60 bespoke meetings between 19 business units and 22 startups, including moderating each session to maximize productivity and alignment.

Key results

  • Over 83% of the scheduled business matchmaking meetings were successfully executed, facilitating the client to form valuable connections with potential fintech partners.
  • Attendees commended the well-structured matchmaking sessions, particularly highlighting the value of the focused one-on-one format and the expertise of the moderators.
