ABOUT

Coinbase is a secure platform that makes it easy to buy, sell, and store cryptocurrency like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and more. The digital currency exchange was founded in 2012 in the US by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam.

This deck was originally used to present at Y Combinator’s demo day. However, it was employed once again to successfully bring Coinbase  the US$600,000 seed funding in 2012. Coinbase then went on to secure more than US$500 million with an existing valuation of around US$8 billion.

The company has facilitated over US$220 billion worth of trades for 35 million users worldwide across 100 countries, according to its website.

Fundraising journey

  • 2012: US$600,000 seed from Adam Draper and others.
  • May 2013: US$5 million series A from Fred Wilson and participated by Ribbit Capital, SV Angel, and Fundersclub.
  • December 2013: US$25 million series B led by Andreessen Horowitz.
  • 2015: US$75 million series C from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Fortune 500 financial services group USAA, Spanish megabank BBVA, and Japanese telcom giant DoCoMo.
  • 2016: US$10.5 million in a form of strategic partnership from Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ (BTMU), Mitsubishi UFJ Capital, and Sozo Ventures.
  • 2017: US$100 million series D led by IVP, with participation from Spark Capital, Greylock Partners, Battery Ventures, Section 32, and Draper Associates.
  • 2018: US$300 million series E led by Tiger Global Management, with participation from Y Combinator Continuity, Wellington Management, Andreessen Horowitz, Polychain, and others.

How is the deck compelling?

  • The deck doesn’t contain too much writings, probably the presenter talks/explains more when presenting it.
  • Provides necessary information about bitcoin at that time together with its transaction growth.
  • Stating where and how bitcoin can be used, along with the explanation of Coinbase’s solution and general information to attract the investors’ interest.
