Uber’s subsidiary Careem used this deck to land $1.7m in seed money

Founded in July 2012, Careem offers ride-hailing, restaurant and grocery delivery, online shopping, e-bike booking, and digital payments through a single app in the greater Middle East region. It currently covers over 100 cities across 14 countries.

In January 2020, the Dubai-based firm was acquired by US ride-hailing giant Uber in a US$3.1 billion transaction.

Careem used this deck to obtain seed funding in 2013.

Fundraising journey

  • 2013: US$1.7 million of seed funding from STC Ventures, Oqal Investment Network, and some angel investors
  • 2014: US$10 million of series B from Al Tayyar Travel Group and STC Ventures
  • 2015: US$60 million of series C led by The Abraaj Group, with participation from Al Tayyar Travel Group, Lumia Capital, and STC Ventures
  • 2016: US$350 million of series D from Rakuten, STC Ventures, The Abraaj Group, and Al Tayyar Travel Group
  • June 2017: US$150 million of second round of series D from Daimler and Kingdom Holding Company
  • August 2017: Undisclosed amount of strategic investment from Didi Chuxing
  • 2018: US$200 million from Kingdom Holding Company, Al Tayyar Travel Group, STC Ventures, and Rakuten
