ABOUT
Babylist is a universal registry for baby products that lets customers add items from a wide range of retailers, including local and independent shops. Users can also register friends and family for things like house cleaning, home-cooked meals, and dog walking, among other services.
Founded in 2011 by former Amazon software engineer Natalie Gordon, Babylist also provides a “cash funds” option for users where friends and family can contribute any amount of money using their credit or debit card into a user’s bank account. The company’s baby registry also includes access to gifts from indie artists and a customized registry for parents who are adopting or using a surrogate.
The US-based firm posted a 4x year-over-year retail revenue growth in 2018, with over 1.5 million people offering more than US$250 million worth of gifts on Babylist. Users have also spent a total of 40 hours on the platform in building their baby registries.
Babylist used this pitch deck to raise seed funding from various investors in 2013.
Fundraising journey
- 2013: The company raised US$620,000 in seed funding from 500 Startups, Okapi Venture Capital, Altair Capital, Google and Uber product designer Chris Messina, Circle of Moms co-founder Mike Greenfield, and Digital Remedy CEO Mike Seiman.
How is the deck compelling?
- The pitch deck begins with the founder’s personal account of an existing problem in the baby registry business and an opportunity within the market.
- It also shows how Babylist will make a profit within the first year in a US$43 billion industry.
- The deck clearly states the amount of capital the company is looking to raise, along with a set target of total investment.
