This article is part of a series of monthly reports where we keep track of tech funding activities in Asia.
In August, Asia saw over 400 funding deals made, totaling over US$5 billion. This lags behind the US$19 billion in total funding across more than 500 deals that the region recorded in July and represents a 22% decrease from the same period last year.
Some highlights this month include Tencent Investment’s US$810 million injection into Guangzhou-based livestreaming service Huya.
Established in 2014, Huya offers a gaming-focused interactive broadcast platform known for its presence in mobile esports. It also covers music, sports, beauty, and content such as reality shows and variety shows.
Other major series C and strategic investments in August include those in Chinese companies such as Yipin Shengxian, Yidian Zixun, and Xpeng Motors.
More than half of the total amount of Asian fundraising last month went to China (52%), followed by India (19%), Korea (11%), and Japan (8%).
