Virgin Gaming now offers Street Fighter 4 money matching via its platform; Asia is expectedly left out

Back in 2010, WorldGaming.com and the Virgin Group founded Virgin Gaming, an online fee-based service based on money matching. Today, the platform has finally included a game well-known for its money matches: Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition.

For the uninitiated, money matching is the art (yes, art) of placing money on the outcome of a match. The cash is usually put down by the match’s participants.

On his Capcom Unity blog, Peter ‘Combofiend’ Rosas reminisced about the days when Street Fighter was still played in arcades, and every loss on a cabinet also meant the loss of the coin spent on it. He also wrote that:

If there was only one thing that would’ve made victories sweeter back then, it would’ve been if each of those quarters that went into the machine, went to me instead. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case back then, but that’s definitely the case now.

To play, all players have to do is to create a Virgin Gaming account, find an appropriate opponent in the lobby, and then lay down their bets. Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms are supported.

Unfortunately, the service is not open to Asia, likely due to strict regulations on foreigners operating businesses in the region. Virgin Gaming deposits winnings directly into bank accounts, so this probably needs a lot more business-wrangling than a simple PayPal payout.

Still, one can dream. In the meantime, Asia still has the luxury of good (and sometimes, great) arcades, so make the most out of real-life money matches while you can!
