How Grab developed its $40b super-app strategy

“It’s like having a time machine, because we know what happens in China will happen in Southeast Asia,” said Grab president Ming Maa of one of the major reasons Grab had pursued a super app strategy back in 2016. With the support of key investor Jixun Foo, managing partner of GGV Capital, he took a page out of the playbook that Chinese tech giants Alibaba and Meituan have pioneered and began to expand Grab’s services to become a lifestyle and financial gateway.

But building a super app platform while maintaining focus is no easy task. Hear from Ming and Jixun as they share how they developed and pursued the super app strategy, as well as the major decisions they had to make along the way.
