DropMySite.com Backups Your Website, Email, and Database in the Cloud

Losing data is seriously a horrifying experience. I had a close encounter when my laptop slipped through my butterfingers. At that point all I had in mind was, “Oh God, the last time I did a data backup was eons ago!”

Well, accidents do happen. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially when your business relies very much on your website. That’s where DropMySite.com comes in — it allows you to back up your websites, databases, and emails in the cloud.

DropMySite.com was started last August by a Singapore-based South African, John Fearon. The idea came about when John was looking for a solution to backup his other startup, EatAds.com, in the cloud. There were solutions available then, but they were inadequate to his needs. He wanted to schedule automatic backups instead of having to do it manually. He realized he there was an opportunity to create a new service to better cater to the needs of website owners.

The service is rather straightforward. After signing up with the website, all you need to do is to fill in your FTP details (for website backup), MySQL details (for database backup), and your email details (for email backup). You will then be directed to a new page where you can schedule your backups and it will all be done at the scheduled time. Now you can’t use the excuse that there’s no time for backup because DropMySite.com does it automatically for you.

Speaking to John at his workspace within Founders Institute Singapore (they are currently renting a space from them), he also assured me that the team takes security very seriously and adopts Secure Socket Layer technology as well as data encryption to protect their users’ information. Unlike Dropbox, they neither allow sharing nor allow deletion for data less than 30 days old. The data is only accessible to users themselves only and DropMySite.com does not have access to it.

DropMySite.com currently offers 2GB of free space when you first sign up, and with each successful referral sign-up earns you additional 256MB of space (up to 4GB). They are also available in seven languages — English, Thai, Bahasa Indonesia, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean and Japanese.
