Graphy, a unit of Indian edtech unicorn Unacademy, has acquired Singapore-based community platform Scenes. The deal size was not disclosed.
Scenes helps creators monetize their following by enabling them to build their own online platforms. The company said it hosts over 2,000 creator-driven communities where they can talk to their followers, hold live events, and sell digital offerings like downloadable content.
With this acquisition, Graphy co-founder and CEO Sumit Jain said the company will expand its reach in the creator ecosystem.
Launched in 2018, Graphy helps educators sell online courses and launch their own websites and apps. The company said it has helped over 100,000 individuals teach online through its services.
The deal marks Unacademy’s first acquisition of the year. Through Graphy, the edtech unicorn previously acquired SaaS platform Spayee in a US$25 million deal.
In April 2022, Unacademy laid off nearly 600 employees, which was less than 10% of its total workforce at the time. A few months later, it was reported that the company implemented cost-cutting measures, including pay cuts for its founders, as part of its efforts to reach profitability.
