Baidu-backed video-streaming firm iQiyi plans to create own regional stars in SEA
“Chinese online video platform iQiyi plans to launch a talent agency in Southeast Asia to cultivate its own entertainers as it pushes to become Asia’s dominant streaming platform,” reported Reuters, citing a senior executive.
Details:
- The Baidu-backed Chinese company announced its aim to launch the agency with Singapore entertainment group GHY Culture & Media and develop stars that will be popular in both China and Southeast Asia.
- IQiyi aims to become an Asian content platform and plans to produce original Southeast Asian TV shows with teams in South Korea and Japan, said Yang Xianghua, president of membership and overseas business at the company.
Context:
- The move comes three months after the firm said it would launch its regional headquarters in Singapore.
- Yang claimed that the video-streaming platform saw its highest growth in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, and achieved 12x the user growth for the region in 2020.
